Create Multiple and Independent Calendars?

ML 10.8.5, Calendar 6.0, running on a mid-2010 MBP (2.4/4/320). iCloud not used; all the data is here on the desktop, none is updated or synched to or from the cloud.

I have one calendar ("DB's Calendar") with all my events, and would like to create a separate calendar to organize the dog's medications. Creating the calendar is easy (⌥-⌘-N, or File > New Calendar). However, when I create an event in that new calendar (⌘ - N, or File > New Event), the new calendar is immediately populated by all the events from DB's Calendar. This occurs even when the calendar list's checkbox by "DB's Calendar" is unchecked.

Seems like the app should be able to manage (and selectively display or print) two different calendars. The only workaround I can imagine is to export all the data from DB's Calendar, delete DB's calendar, create the dog's calendar and print it, delete the dog's calendar, then re-create DB's Calendar and import the data.

Am I missing something completely obvious?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Hello Eric,

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. Back-to-My-Mac was (and is) not selected.

I did this:

1. Added a new user. Calendar behaved in the same way as in my user account.

2. Booted into Safe Mode; then

Calendar behaved the same way in my user account; and

When I created another new user, Calendar continued to behave the same way.

3. Rebooted normally; then

Calendar behaved in the same way in my user account; but

When I created another new user, Calendar behaved correctly and didn't automatically populate the new user's calendar with other user's events.

During all this, the only applications running were the Finder and Calendar.

It's encouraging that in Condition 3 with a new user, Calendar behaved correctly. That suggests that something is awry in my user's Calendar preferences or my user's Calendar file. Next step will be to trash Calendar's preferences in my user account to see if that changes things. If not, then I'll try exporting my Calendar data, quitting Calendar, trashing the files in~/Library/Calendars, restarting Calendar, and importing the data to see if things have changed.

Thanks again for the support. I'll check back in with results.

No luck yet. I trashed the preferences files and the calendars themselves (after exporting the data), then imported the data to a new DB Calendar and tested to see if its listings were independent of another newly-created calendar. They weren't. For grins, I again added a new user and tried there - with the new user, Calendar behaves correctly, as it did in Condition 3 above.

Seems like something remains corrupted in my user files. Are there other files to delete beyond the preferences located at ~/Library/Preferences, and the calendar files located at ~/Library/Calendars ?

~Library/Contains has a Calendar agent folder. I would move things to your desktop and test in case of an oops. A backup wouldn't hurt either.

I did figure a workaround that allows the dog's meds calendar to exist: I created the dog as as a new user; his calendar is there and works correctly.
